Multiply Your Marketing Like a Virus

Posted: 17 May 2009 08:14 AM PDT

googleIn today’s Internet, conversations are cropping up all over the place. People are talking. They are talking about products. They are talking about businesses. And they are certainly talking about their experiences.

When you look at how blogs, forums and social networking sites have exploded in the last few years, you can see how powerful word-of-mouth is. But the question is, is it all really important? Can it really help your business?

Yes.

And I’m not talking about traffic. And you don’t need to be controversial, either. I’m talking creating systems to leverage, manage and profit from the “buzz.”

Word-of-mouth is one of the most powerful lead and business generation processes there is. Online, some people call it “word-of-mouse.” But we know it more as viral marketing.

Viral marketing is the process of implementing means or tools through which the knowledge of your existence self-propagates. Like a virus, your visibility spreads throughout a network of people who refer you to each other.

Notwithstanding the power of backlinking, traffic and SEO, viral marketing is key for a number of reasons. Success in the offline world is “location, location, location.” The Internet is no different. Your success depends highly on the number of locations you appear online - places on which your site, link, company or product name exist.

In essence, to expand your reach, you need to be in as many places as possible, talked about by as many people as possible and be in front of as many eyeballs as possible.

With viral marketing, there are three ways of doing it:

  • Create content
  • Create applications
  • Create systems

The first is self-explanatory.

  • Your content may be controversial or buzzworthy.
  • It may create raging fans - or enraged enemies.

The second is simple: you create an application — whether it’s a video, audio, file, software, document, etc - that people can pass around, and thus proliferates the knowledge of your existence on the web through other people’s efforts.

I might write about these two at a later time. But for now, the one on which I want to focus is the third: creating a system.

Before I give you some examples, let me explain why word-of-mouth works wonders. Those who get to know you or to know about you through a third party grant you a higher level of confidence, credibility and loyalty. According to Dr. Robert Cialdini in his amazing book, “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion,” this is social proof in action.

Remember a dictum a mentor of mine once told me, which is: “Implication is far more powerful than specification.” In other words, if you tell people you’re the best, that you’re the leader in your field, or that your product is the best solution to their needs, your self-serving promotional bias makes it all suspect.

However, if someone other than you - whether it’s on a blog, in an email, on a social networking site or in person - says to another that you are indeed the best or that you do have the best solution to their problems, how much more believable will that person’s statement be? How much more credible and trustworthy?

The answer is “definitely more.”

Accordingly, word-of-mouth is not only important because it creates an awareness of your business (let alone traffic), but also it is important to the degree to which third party marketing indirectly communicates greater credibility, superiority and value of the products or services you offer.

In his book “The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding,” Al Ries stresses the importance of leadership and how that leadership is communicated.

According to Ries, people never buy the best - they only think they do. They usually buy the leader (or what they perceive as being the best). And that perception is often molded by what they are told and by what others do, not by what is fact or by what is being advertised.

Coke, for example, outsells Pepsi. But according to Ries, taste tests reveal that Pepsi is the better tasting brand. So, why does Coke still beat Pepsi in sales? It is not because it is the leader in the marketplace or promoted itself as such but because it is known as the leader. And the reason it is known as the leader is because Coke was the first cola “in the mind” of the marketplace.

It is the one most talked about, even to this day. When a person is introduced to cola for the first time, they are often told to try Coke. Restaurant patrons still ask for “coke,” even when Pepsi is the only cola served. Why is that? While other colas are bombarding them with marketing messages, people have heard of Coke first, and most likely from other people.

Consequently, if people hear about you from other people, and not some advertisement or pitch, this social proof will create not only a certain buzzworthiness about you but also an almost instant trustworthiness.

How do you do that? The most significant method is to be the first. If your business or website is unique, focuses on a niche or is the first in some category, the knowledge of your existence will spread quite naturally, almost like wildfire. It becomes viral in and of itself, in other words.

Now, I’m not saying you need to be new. I’m only saying you need to be unique. Or better yet, you need to be the first. Whether it’s catering an existing product to a new niche, or adding a new twist to an existing product, you become the first.

I said it before: don’t be the best, be the first. But more important, as Ries pointed out, “Don’t be the first in the marketplace, be the first in the MIND of the marketplace.”

That said, there are ways to use systems that will leverage the spreading of that message, on the other hand, which helps to multiply your marketing punch. Such systems both simulate and stimulate word-of-mouth advertising.

Networking systems, for example, include strategic marketing alliances, joint ventures, and affiliate programs. And unlike the more traditional traffic generators such as ads and search engines, these specific tools are much more effective since they are used by third parties and not by the original advertiser.

In these cases, people don’t find you. They are told where you are because someone told them about you - especially if that “someone” is a person whose opinion they value.

If you received a call, letter or email from someone you know (and especially trust) referring you to a particular company, how much more credible will that referral be when compared to a blatant advertisement coming from the company itself?

You got it. A lot more.

When we think of viruses, we remember when “Melissa” and “I Love You” hit the scene in the late 90s and early 2000s. No, they weren’t some kind of adult-oriented websites, but computer viruses (or is that virii?).

But here’s why they were so effective: the devious (or perhaps even brilliant) way these viruses worked was that, after opening the email attachment, it sent more virus-infected emails to the first fifty people in your address book without your knowledge.

While we are bombarded with spam and phishing attempts, and anti-virus warnings telling us to never open an attachment from an unknown person, how can we resist doing so when the email apparently comes from someone we actually do know (since the virus uses address books to multiply itself and even personalizes the email with that person’s name)?

We can certainly learn the way viruses work - and, in the same way, apply that process to online marketing.

How? Remember that good ol’ fashion process called “networking”? According to Jill Griffin’s wonderful book “Customer Loyalty: How to Earn it, How to Keep it,” we are more open, trusting and loyal when doing business with or being marketed by people we know - and we certainly refer them to others more often as well.

Networking grants you the ability to reach corners untapped - areas that would have been unreachable otherwise. I personally don’t advocate traditional networking (the simple, “I’m open for business” kind) because, in my experience, it hasn’t brought me anything substantial in return. While it can be a fantastic marketing tool, the way in which networking is conducted is often the reason why it does not produce any favorable results.

When you’re only networking, more often than not people will want something in return - otherwise, they will lose interest or stop sending referrals if you don’t take the time to recognize their efforts. A way to consistently reward others is to turn your networking efforts into systems - in other words, to develop strategic marketing alliances.

There are many ways to accomplish this. But the most effective forms of networking are those that are systematized.

A traditional network is one in which qualified leads that you can both share, or information about each other that is promoted to each other’s market, clientele or subscribers. This way, you can effectively cross-promote or share markets with each other. As long as your alliance logically shares a same target market but without directly competing with you, it could be potentially rewarding.

On the Internet, this technique is one in which a systematized method of cross-promotion between you and your alliance through a unique, joint marketing effort is created. It is also often referred to as a “joint venture.”

For example, this includes the coupling of complementary products or services in a single offer that’s exclusively marketed to each other’s market. While different, these offers are combined and marketed under the banner of a single promotion.

Whose product or offer can you bundle with yours to create an entirely new and distinct package?

In its simplest form, if your alliance sells a product to a market that matches yours, they can add to their offer additional products, services or bonuses from you, which may include an exclusive special offer for one of your products as an upsell.

But the best method I’ve found is when you create an entirely distinct product with those from two or more strategic alliances, amalgamating existing products from all companies into a single offer that’s sold simultaneously from your partners’ sites.

For example, you sell cookware online. You can easily team up with a publisher specializing in cookbooks and throw a book in the mix. While you raise the price and split the profits with the publisher, you instantly raise the perceived value of the cookware through a co-branded approach or a combined package of non-competing products or services.

Best of all, each of you market the “new” product separately while sharing in each other’s traffic, market, lead-base and referral-sources (i.e., your own respective networks, including affiliates, “fans” and even suppliers) - thus doubling the reach with the same marketing effort.

If they have their own distinct affiliate program, network of affiliates and fan base, including their own blogs for instance, they can leverage the knowledge of your existence quite rapidly. And vice versa.

Ultimately, by leveraging the efforts of others you not only propagate the knowledge of your existence on the web, but also you create trust and credibility. And if you cater to a new market, or offer a new product by taking an existing product and giving it a new twist, you also give yourself an extra dose of buzzworthiness, too.

Finding the Best Keywords for SEO

Posted: 17 May 2009 11:43 AM PDT

We all gather hundreds of keywords and keyword phrases in an effort to get the most results possible for our SEO dollar. We are terrified of letting any traffic slip away because we miss out on any keywords. However, if you try to optimize your website for too many keywords, the overall effect SEO power is decreased. Ultimately, the results suffer instead of improve!

You should narrow down your keywords to the most crucial ones to ensure better results. You can always add more later, once you have your main traffic flowing. How do you narrow down your keywords list? All of them look important, so how do you know which keyword phrases people are more likely to use? Do you concentrate on local and geographic search? Do you target a particular gender or age demographic?

First, analyze your approach to keyword analysis. Do you use a keyword generation tool that spits out hundreds of keyword options, or do you brainstorm with your team to come up with keywords, or do you surf the net imagining you are a customer yourself? You are more likely to get better results if you use keyword generation tools sparingly, more as a starting point for brainstorming than an end all of searches. The tools try to create a keyword phrase list based on the preset formula that is fed into the program, and can turn out various keywords in nonsensical phrases.

Best practices dictate choosing one or two main keyword phrases per page, plus up to three more secondary phrases that are associated with the main keywords. More than that will start giving you trouble as the effect for each keyword decreases. When you are short listing keywords, first come up with a broader list by becoming the user yourself. Next, add to the list the keywords which you think the users should be actually using to search your services. Don't use too many technical terms - substitute laymen's terms when possible.

If your website is already up and running, have a tool installed so you can see what phrases users are typing that land them at your site. You need to focus on those keywords as they are likely being searched by other users too. This is a good place to start work if you are revamping existing sites.

After coming up with the initial list, add modifiers or qualifiers that will make your keyword phrase more targeted. Many modifiers are adjectives such as cheap, affordable easy; other will be geographic qualifiers such as city, state or region. Geographic qualifiers are much more powerful than adjective qualifiers, especially for local search.

Using the right keywords is crucial to your site's success.

Finding New Keyword Phrases

Posted: 16 May 2009 10:17 AM PDT

When you are looking at your backlinks that people have given you voluntarily, you can always get new ideas. Simply trace links to see where they come from and why they linked to you in the first place - look at the anchor text they used and perhaps you will learn a thing or two!

Start by using one of those cool little programs that lets you see who has been linking to you. They are readily available all over the net, and simple to install; or if you use Google Webmaster you will have easy access to them from that site as well, and a lot of other things.

If you find a relevant site linking to you, see what their keywords are and how they relate. Combine them with your own set of keywords to come up with new combinations to work into your site. Google's Tool is is a great thing to use because it actually tells you what the most commonly used words are being used in the anchor text of these inbound links. You might find that you can target whole new demographics by looking at your related sites customer base and trying to target them directly.

Keeping an eye on your inbound links is a good idea all the time. You want to see who is linking to you in case you end up with some links that would be better no-followed - this does happen, and you don't want them giving you a bad reputation. A backlink from someone who is in cahoots with a link farm is never a good plan - reputation by association kicks in even if it is the sixth degree of separation, it will always come back to bite you on the butt.

Checking out backlinks also lets you see if any reciprocal agreements are being honored. Unfortunately, some people are unscrupulous enough to trade link postings and then renege. They think they can keep your link to them, but delete or no-follow their link to you. Remember that how someone links to you is almost as important as the fact that they link to you at all!

Don't be thrown off course, but do try to widen your possible customer base by examining your links and seeing if some relevant connections have eluded you. Happy Linking!

SEO VS Readable Copy - There Shouldn’t be a VS!

Posted: 16 May 2009 09:52 AM PDT

It shouldn't be a dilemma. Writing for your visitors, supplying them with easy to read copy that convinces them support you or buy your product is just as important as generating keyword rich text to help you climb in the search engine rankings. What you have to learn is how to combine good, accessible copy with keyword optimization geared towards reaching high search engine rankings.

Readability and ability to engage and convince the consumer added to search engine optimization equals complete online success, so obviously you should do apply both concepts to your copy; not so hard a thing to do when you realize that true SEO and letting a person having what they need aren't exactly mutually exclusive. This is because search engines need text that tells them what the post, page or article is about, with words that will be searched by regular readers. These are the words the readers use for queris, and are words they know and understand.

The web readers of today are very impatient and will leave your site within a few seconds if they don't immediately grasp what it is about. The headline, the title and the first couple of paragraphs must be completely focused on the main message: "We have what you need!"

Interwoven in that message is the one to the search engines: Here, this is what this page is about, and these are the keyword phrases your human users are likely to search for.

The top things to remember when writing web content are these:

  • Avoid clichés and worn out ways to hook attention.
  • Use bulleted lists to add white space and help people's eyes focus.
  • Don't stuff too much copy on a page, or too many keywords in your content.
  • State benefits first and foremost. Then let the customer know what else they get if they buy now - the sense of urgency is what you want to instill.
  • Use headings and sub headings to break up the page - again, white space!
  • Make your site laid out for easy navigation and then test how people are using your site to see if you can make it even better.
  • Use online tools for keyword research, as well as brainstorming.
  • Make sure you have good "About Us" and FAQ pages - these can become highly searched in their own right.
  • Be fairly informal for general topics, and more professional only when you are addressing a professional group. Remember who your target demographic is and what you can do to interest and attract them.

If you follow these rules, you should have readable, SEO friendly copy!

SEO Step By Step Guide– 100. Does domain extensions have any special role to play?

Posted: 16 May 2009 05:21 AM PDT

This is one of the crucial questions among the SEO professionals and the responses are more speculative than definitive. This is one of the areas that is not been subjected to enough research. For those who are wondering what we are referring here, all of us would have come across various types of domain names such as .com, .net, .edu, .org, .gov etc as the second part of website's domain name. Many of us wonder whether these domain name extensions have any special significance to our website's SEO or ranking.

We can come across a number of varied opinions among the SEO experts. Some of them say that it is just an SEO myth and they do not matter to the search engines. Whereas others say that certain domain extensions have special significance for our website's ranking. For example extensions such as .edu, .org, .gov etc. are considered to be more authoritative and they seem to get better ranking. However there are others who argue that they are considered as authority sites not because they are of certain TLD extensions but they have more references online making them have stronger online presence and better back link counts.

Certain SEO experts feel that domain names that are specific to countries such as .co.uk, .com.au, .in, etc., may be of special significance to websites that are country specific. If your website sells products or services that are country specific then it is better to go for domain names that are specific to our country. Today we have a longer list of options than before. Though there may be varied views against the TLDs, we will not lose anything by choosing an appropriate domain name. In case search engine's should make a difference or implement something along those lines we will stand to gain. You must also remember that you cannot purchase all domain types as an individual or as a business owner. For example individuals cannot purchase .gov extensions. Therefore, you must first choose your domain TLD before you start working on your website's content and design.

However, most commercial sites seem to prefer .com for their domain TLD. Also, when people make random searches for a business, they first search with .com extension and only when they don't find the site in .com extension they will try to look for other extensions. Since .com was one of the first TLDs that we have known, it is more easily remembered and preferred over other domain extensions though they may not have any special significance on our ranking. Some of the extensions have been noted for their spammy behavior for example .info domain names are notorious for the spam mails that they generate. Incidentally, the cost of .info domains is much cheaper to register so this might have prompted the spammers to go for .info domains.

SEO Step By Step Guide– 99. Questions on Pagerank-6

Posted: 15 May 2009 09:00 AM PDT

There are two more common questions regarding pagerank, which we shall discuss in this post.

8. Can we buy good pagerank?
Google pagerank is so very desirable, people are ready to pay any amount of money to get good Pagerank. Unfortunately, we cannot buy pagerank. If only we should be able to buy pagerank, we can save ourselves from at least 50% of our efforts on our website promotion. On the other hand if we can buy pagerank, it would defeat the entire purpose of assigning pagerank and it will be totally against the pagerank technology. Though we cannot buy pagerank directly from Google, we can buy number of other things that will get us good pagerank. One of the things that we can buy is good link building services. Don't buy links because when you buy links from sites, it will turn out to be more harmful than being helpful. It can even get your website banned. On the other hand by making use of good link building services, you can make your website more important in the eyes of Google and encourage Google algorithm to assign better pagerank for your website. We have seen various link building strategies in the past posts in great detail. You can make use of any or all of the link building approaches to boost your websites links. Back links are one of the most important factors for getting good pagerank.

When you are building links for your website, make sure that they are from relevant domains. Also pay attention to building deep links. Deep links will help your website's rank well balanced and all the pages of your website will get good search engine placement.

9. Is Google pagerank and Google search engine ranking the same?
This is one of the big confusions that people have. People tend to confuse a lot between pagerank and Google search engine ranking. If you too have been having confusions, in this regard, it is time to have them clarified right away. Pagerank is the value assigned by Google to indicate the importance of your website based on its algorithm. You will be able to see your website's pagerank using Google toolbar. On the other hand, Google search engine ranking refers to your website's position in the search engine results page. To attract good traffic to your website you should be on top of the results. Lesser the number of your position the better on the other hand with regard to pagerank the value of the pagerank should be higher. Therefore, pagerank and search engine ranking are two different things. However, good pagerank will help your website get good ranking in the search results page. This is one of the reasons why people spend sleepless nights to have their website's Google pagerank improved.

SEO for Local Businesses

Posted: 15 May 2009 08:57 AM PDT

se-optimizationWant your local business to thrive online? There is an abundance of information about how to target local search terms and become an online leader in your local area and niche but it’s easy to experience information overload with all the advice that’s available out there. Here are the 5 essential components of local search that will help you rank and dominate in your local market.

1. Add Geographical Information to Your Page Titles

Make sure to use both your target keyword term and location name in your page titles. This allows search engines to determine easily what your site is about and search engine users are more likely to click on your site if it contains relevant geographical information and keywords.

2. Get Your Business Listed on Prominent Websites Directories

Google Maps, Yahoo Local, and MSN Live Local are all websites where you can have your business listed in order to make it easier for potential customers to find you. By claiming ownership of your business listings on these prominent sites, you allow both search engines and potential customers to get correct information about your business. Sometimes unscrupulous competitors may claim your listing on these sites to undermine you. Make sure you’re the first one to claim your listings in order to build trust between you, the search engines, and potential customers. There are also several local search directories that get significant traffic where you can claim your listings. Click2connect.com and Citysquares.com are examples of local search directories with good traffic.

3. Provide Plenty of Information about Your Business in Your Listings

When search engine users stumble upon your website through clicking on your business listing, you want to be sure that you give them as much information as possible about your service. In addition to including the basics such as your address, contact information, and operation hours give potential customers plenty of reasons why they ought to choose you over your competitors. For example, mention exactly which towns and neighborhoods you service, what credit cards you accept, what your guarantees are, and anything else that is pertinent.

4. Use Your Target Keyword Phrases as Anchor Text in Your Hyperlinks

Link reputation is an integral component of search engine algorithms. When possible, make sure that the links pointing back to your site use your best target keyword phrase and variations of your location as anchor text. Your internal links also contribute to link reputation so be sure to link to pages within your site using good link text. This link text can be used in your site navigation, HTML sitemap, and links within your content.

5. Monitor Reviews about Your Business Online

Thanks to the internet, consumers can submit online reviews of businesses to customer-controlled review sites like Yelp and share their experiences, whether good or bad. This could be highly beneficial to your business if it gets great reviews but it could also hurt you if you get some bad reviews. Monitor the reviews your business receives on a regular basis so you can spot bad reviews when they arise and dispute them if necessary. Sometimes customers don’t always give fair reviews so make that if you do get bad reviews that are unjustified, the potential customers who see them can get both sides of the story at the very least. Using Google Alerts is a convenient way to keep track of what is being said about your business online.

Focus on these 5 strategies in local search to boost your business’ online presence. There are several tactics you can use to increase targeted traffic to your business’ website and improve its ranking but these are some of the most effective ways to give your business a solid footing in local search.

How I Learned to Twitter in 7 Weeks

Posted: 15 May 2009 08:44 AM PDT

I stumbled onto Twitter as a marketing tool completely by accident. I was looking for a way to promote a book I’m working on, and a friend suggested that I do two things: Start a blog and get on Twitter.

“What is Twitter? I don’t get how will it help me promote my book to tell people what I am having for breakfast,” I replied. “It would take me too long to explain, just try it out,” he said.

What follows here is a week-by-week review of how I learned that Twitter can be an important business-development tool for lawyers and law firms.

Week 1: Signing up The sign-up at Twitter. com was just like everything else. I needed to add a picture but luckily, I was still holding on to the picture used for my attorney bio, so I uploaded that. A bio. Usually I leave them blank, but this one was limited to 150 characters, so I wrote: “Father, husband, attorney, and aspiring author. Follow me as I work to get published.” I was pretty happy with myself, it was a perfect bio for someone trying to get published. After I finished my profile, Twitter suggested that I start following a bunch of famous people like Ashton Kutcher and Shaquille O’Neal. Was it the real Shaq? Turns out it was. These famous people have almost 80,000 people following them, and the truth is I just didn’t get it.

Week 2: I start following people I needed help finding some publishers to submit my manuscript to, so I used the Twitter search function. I searched using the term “publisher” and turned up about 50 results. So I started following all 50 of them. Some were small publishers, some were big, but the cool part was that they were all posting stories and links all about writing and publishing, one of the articles was “10 Things Every Author Should Do Before Submitting a Manuscript.” This was good stuff, exactly the types of things I needed to learn in my situation. I also realized that, as I started following people, the majority of them followed me back. Now I had more than 30 followers. I was feeling pretty good.

Week 3: A fortuitous connection Some total stranger was asking about my book, this was great. So I explained my book to him, and we chatted back and forth using Twitter’s Direct Messages, which are kind of like an e-mail message or private messages on Facebook. He was an author who has self-published in the past, and he gave me the phone number of one of the gurus of self-publishing. Out of the blue, I call this guy up, and he takes an hour and talks to me. He gives me advice and shares a few contacts with me.

Week 4: Spreading the message When someone shares an interesting link to an article on Twitter or shares a good quote, it gets repeated. This is called a “retweet.” I noticed that whenever I posted articles, they never got retweeted. Why not? Because they weren’t interesting enough. So I started paying attention to the types of articles that were retweeted. Usually they announced breaking news or shared really interesting content on blogs, so I started trying to think of something to post on my blog that might garner some interest. I posted a satirical response to an article one of my buddies from law school posted, and it spread like wildfire, or at least like a small brush fire. I had 170 unique visitors to my blog in just an hour or two in response to that one post. That was fun but, more importantly, it made me realize the power of Twitter. Here I was with fewer than 100 followers, and my message spread well beyond that circle.

Week 5: My first corporate client “Does anybody know an attorney that practices contract law?” “Yeah, that’s actually what I do, what do you need?” I replied suspiciously. “My friend needs some legal advice about a contract, could you talk to her?” “Sure, send me a direct message with her contact into.” After exchanging e-mail addresses and a few phone conversations, my firm had a new client. All our communication was exchanged over the phone and e-mail, and the retainer and payment were paid by credit card. It was so easy, it made me realize that maybe there was more to Twitter than just promoting books. Maybe I could use Twitter to find clients. You see, Twitter functions like a giant cocktail party where thousands of conversations are going on simultaneously. You can listen in on any conversation you please, you just simply need to “follow” the individuals having the conversation. Unlike two other social networking sites, Facebook and Myspace, you don’t need to be accepted as someone’s “friend” to listen in on their conversation. For example, if MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice (both of whom are on Twitter) are having a Twitter conversation, then you may listen in if you have a Twitter account- you can even try to add your own clever enough comment or question to be included in their discussion.

Week 6: Automated searches Using the free program Tweetdeck, I set up searches so that every time someone mentioned “contract law” on Twitter, from anywhere in the world, their post was filtered through a search that arrived instantly on my computer. I soon learned how to create an alert that would send me an e-mail or text message any time the term “contract law” was mentioned in a Twitter post. That allowed me to respond in real time. Return for a second to our cocktail-party analogy. Here you are at this gigantic cocktail party, and you overhear a conversation about contract law. “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but overhear you are looking for a corporate attorney. Could I recommend someone? And like that, a new relationship is created that is specifically targeted. Here are a few of the comments I saw posted on Twitter after setting up my search: “I urgently need an immigration attorney, can anybody recommend one?” “My friend is getting a divorce, can anybody recommend an attorney?” “Does anybody know a NY attorney I can ask a malpractice question to?”

Week 7 and beyond: A world of opportunity I have been on Twitter for 14 weeks. I have a large following now, but more importantly, I have learned some amazing tools that are helping me to expand my zone of influence beyond just Western New York. Every day I see potential leads- some of which I pass on or have to ignore because they are outside of my area of expertise. There are some 12 million users of Twitter now, mostly highly educated people in urban centers, and they are talking about every single legal topic imaginable. My recommendation for any lawyer? You just need to jump in and give it a try.

About the Author: Adrian Dayton is an attorney who was recently admitted to practice law in the state of New York. He is also an author awaiting publication of his first book “The Year of 12 Virtues.” He can be found on Twitter @adriandayton or at his website http://adriandayton.com/blog/

Social Selling, Taking Sales 2.0 offline

Posted: 15 May 2009 08:41 AM PDT

You can’t help but notice the use of the word change over the last few months. Change is being brought up in anything you can imagine right now. In the sales world some would say we are seeing Change but are sales approaches just staying the same? I am going to jump on the Sales 2.0 craze here, but I will present it the old-fashion way.

Belly-to-Belly Sales Works

No sales technique is as effective as sitting belly-to-belly, chatting, and liking who you are hanging out with. Stop for a Minute… Have you ever created a long-term and highly profitable client over email? No. And, you never will.

The Internet has become an important and incredible marketplace for connecting intent and offers. However, it rarely sells and it never creates a customer relationship.

What About Amazon.com?

You said Amazon.com… Right? This is a perfect case study. Amazon.com probably thinks we have a fabulous relationship–thousands of dollars later. I got an incentive offer to buy online at Barnes and Nobles, another to purchase at a Borders bookstore. The result? Hundreds of dollars in lost sales revenue to Amazon.com. And, I would do it again.

I am not suggesting that Amazon.com get belly-to-belly with me. I am suggesting that if you are selling mortgages, real estate, or enterprise software that little “competitive opportunity” in your client relationship management will cost you thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions.

I am also not suggesting that you quickly visit every prospect in your sales pipeline. Here is what I am suggesting:

Get Social Online

I happen to be a big supporter of Internet marketing, but often it’s being poorly executed. Many companies and individuals are hiding behind the anonymity of the Web. This is the best way to diminish your sales opportunities. People don’t want to buy from “anonymous.” They want to buy from real people, people that are like themselves!

The growth of Social Media has made this process easy. The variety of social networking sites have given you simple platforms to design your social selling strategy. You don’t need to be an expert or need advanced knowledge of the Internet, web programming, SEO, or other technical barrier. Just simply sign-up and give us a little introduction to who you are, what you do, and how you can help people.

Form Connections

Now that you have created a social presence on some of the networking sites… ex: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter (it doesn’t matter). And, I like what I see. How do I contact you?

This is the biggest mistake that is constantly being repeated. Keep in mind that no one buys from “anonymous” or @HotRealEstateDeals or whizzy345@hotmail.com. Avoid complicating this! Don’t anonymize your contact information. Make contacting you easy.

This is important…. If they do contact you answer the email or phone call! Talk to everyone. Talk to anyone. It will make you more profitable!

Play: Be lively and Fun

No one likes talking to the stiff guy at the party right? Avoid being so stiff. Learn to have fun and play a little. Let prospective clients see you play a bit. Post pictures, videos, places you are visiting, books you are reading, movies you liked, ideas you are thinking about, dreams you are dreaming.

Also No one likes talking business all of the time–especially your customers.

The Secret Here: Those personal insights and playful posts attract people like you, people that will like you. And, people buy from people they like.

Win Offline

So bottom line is make your Sales 2.0 strategy to attract online and sell offline. The Key here is building trust and depth with your clients by getting belly-to-belly, just like the old fashion way.
